IN THE NAME OF THE DIGNITY
John O' Brien's fight..

Co-production with Idee Originale (France), TG4 and the Region Rhone Alpes (France)
52' and 90' film documentary.

Brief Synopsis and treatment

John O’Brien is a fisherman from Inis Bo Finne, a Gaeltacht Island (Irish speaking area) off the coast of Donegal who disagrees with the Government’s total ban on salmon fishing with driftnets.
John’s people have been fishing salmon for generations and he would like to be able to pass this tradition on to his sons. Due to the ban, this is currently not an option but John intends to fight for an exemption for Island Communities who depend on fishing as a means of livelihood. The ban serves to highlight how Island communities have been neglected and poorly served by government, and through the course of his campaign John discovers that the salmon fishing ban is only the tip of the iceberg. His identity, traditions and way of life will probably disappear with with the end of fishing.
John decided to unite the other island fishermen from Donegal into a long campaign in Ireland and in Europe.
With the support of solicitors and indigenous human rights specialists, they will try to get their rights back. This will enable them to stay on their island and keep their traditions for future generations.
A fight against economic fatality, against a bureaucratic dictator which believes in statistics and not in human beings.

ALFRED WALLIS AND JAMES DIXON
52' documentary produce by Lugh Films
with the support of Eilean na Gaeltachta.

Short synopsis
Alfred Wallis (1855-1942) and James Dixon (1887-1970) were two artists from different generations who lived and worked at different ends of the British Isles - Wallis in Cornwall, Dixon in the Tory Islands. However, there are similarities between their backgrounds, artistic principles and positions within the art world that make a joint documentary relevant and timely.

Both artists were fishermen by trade who took up painting late in life and managed to become important figures within the history of 20th-Century art with works in many major collections. Neither received any official art training which has led to them being described as 'primitives'. Both had close relationships with professional artists who introduced their work into the contemporary art world and helped secure their place in art history.
